Leveling up is the primary form of progression before your first Rebirth. Every level automatically unlocks new tools, armor, or structures, all the way up to level 100. Experience comes from breaking resources, killing mobs, and collecting Essence, with Gods being by far the fastest way to gain XP once you're strong enough to fight them.

Void Pickaxe and Void Axe actually unlock at level 91, the same level as Pink Diamond gear, not level 100 like the rest of the Void set. Void Armor and the Void Bag are the only Void items that wait until level 100.
Tips
Most of the level curve is front-loaded with cheap early unlocks. The biggest jumps in power come at levels 40, 50, 70, 90, and 91, when Adurite, Crystal, Magnetite, Emerald, and Pink Diamond gear unlock one after another.
